How to get to the top of Google

If you want to know how to move up Google search (or any search engine) rankings, you’ve come to the right place!

To rank better on Google you need to understand how the search engine operates. Google’s aim is to give users exactly what they want with pages that provide the best possible user experience & relevance. They will give priority to websites that do this. You can show Google that you provide relevant information and a quality user experience by targeting a range of factors (e.g. technical factors, on page factors including keywords, content, local SEO, domain authority, mobile SEO), which together are known as SEO.

For example, using semantically related keywords in your content on your site will show Google that you provide relevant information. Ensuring that you have a fast page load speed indicates to Google that you provide a good user experience. These are just two small examples of a range of techniques SEO uses to boost your rankings.

If you set up your website yourself, you will need to do some basic SEO to start moving up the rankings. Once this is done, you will need to investigate your competitors to find out what to do to beat their rankings!

It’s important to note that whilst many aspects of SEO are simple to implement, an understanding of marketing will make SEO work much more effective. When picking keywords, for example, a five minute brainstorming session will not be sufficient. Rather you should develop a clear understanding of your customers, know what kind of questions they have and therefore what search terms they will use. Using these terms as keywords in your content will be much more effective as Google will identify them as more relevant for users.

Everyone wants to get to the top of the search results, but please also bear in mind that you need to have realistic expectations. Whether you will actually be able to get to page one using SEO depends heavily on your competition and how you compete with them. If there is heavy competition from well-established sites with high domain authority (a measure of how well-respected they are as a source of information), it doesn’t necessarily mean you can’t rank higher, but it does mean that you’ll have to work harder and longer for it.
